Nextblue aims to bridge the gap between water research and experiences on the ground. We envision a world where researchers are sensitive to local contexts, and the voices of local communities are at the centre of discussions, especially in times of severe climate change.
We believe storytelling has the power to do this, as it paints a picture of the real-life experiences of those directly affected by water challenges. Through our work, we strive to create a global community which values the stories behind the water.
What we value
Nextblue believes in the importance of telling stories from local perspectives. That is why our heart lies in the stories from those on the ground in delta areas. Whether it be through a video, an article or podcast, we take pride in knowing that independent voices from the ground are being heard through our journalism.
Our diverse, open-minded, and engaged audience is our foundation. With this we believe that we can build bridges across disciplines and borders, through engaging a global readership with varying perspectives on climate and water issues.
Nextblue features nuanced and insightful content. By working with local communities in river delta areas worldwide, we are specialized in analysing and interpreting the complexity of the water world. This informed and constructive approach makes our content powerful.
What we offer
Our newsletter, podcast and stories are free for everyone, and we put our premium features behind a paywall.
We also offer video productions for clients, such as Wageningen University & Research, and the Global Center on Adaptation. Our tailor-made content is related to the following topics:

- Urban resilience
- Clean energy
Who is behind Nextblue?
My name is Joep Janssen. I am a delta expert who became fascinated by storytelling after having lived in Vietnam for four years.
My career in architecture and journalism gave me the creative tools to identify the underlying structure to successful narratives. I have launched Nextblue in 2014 to empower the voices of communities in the heart of delta regions around the world – through stories.
Today, we are a diverse team of 60+ researchers, activists and journalists who believe in the power of storytelling. Our aim is to bridge the gap between local communities and professionals.
For this objective, we have developed a unique three-step approach:
We provide storytelling training to local journalists, communities and stakeholders to produce climate stories;
We co-produce videos, articles and podcasts with these participants;
And we share their stories with decision makers during online events and campaigns for meaningful climate actions.
Nextblue is a young and fast-growing platform, with an increasing community worldwide. We work globally with individuals, non-governmental organisations, companies, and governments, to reach their communication targets and inspire our audience. Together we offer a valuable knowledge base, for you to be part of.
If you would like to give it a shot, you can subscribe to Nextblue for free.
